Invest in yourself. This is a phrase you most likely have heard more than once. But that’s hard to do when you’re swamped with raising kids, working to pay the bills, stuck in the daily grind, or all of the above. However, investing in yourself is one of the best return investments you can have. So why is it something that always seems to constantly be put on hold?

Earlier this year my almost 11 year marriage came to an end. Through all the ups and the downs, this has been a very hard and very unforeseen chapter in my life; and there were definitely moments when I completely lost myself in all the muck. But as the dust settled, I realized more than ever that if I wanted to survive this personal challenge, I needed to spend more time investing in myself.

About two weeks ago I jumped on my Insta stories to talk about my divorce and what I was doing to reconnect with myself. Always curious about how others do things, I asked anyone watching to message me what they were doing to reconnect with and invest in themselves. Surprisingly, no one shared a single thing. Instead, I got a handful of messages from other women asking me to share what people shared with me because they were in desperate need of ideas on how they too could invest in themselves. So, either no knows what to do when it comes to investing in themselves or people just aren’t sharing what they’re doing. Ha ha! Either way, I noticed there was a definite need.

13 Powerful Ways to Invest in Yourself

1. Set Goals

Like I mentioned in THIS post, goals are great way to stay motivated and be happy about what you are doing with your life. Just make sure that when you’re setting your goals they are realistic, measurable, and things you actually want to do.

2. Keep Your Creative Juices Flowing

Creativity is one of the best ways for us to be inspired, have fun, and appreciate the things around us. Plus, it prevents any talents you may have from going dormant or completely extinct. Which makes this a great way to invest in yourself.

3. Take Care of Your Body

Even though I used to believe that I could get by each day on just carbs, little sleep, and minimal exercise, my 30 something body has taught me otherwise. Ha ha! These days, I have come to accept that if anyone wants to do and be their best in all that they do, their body plays a big part in that. Making healthier eating choices and exercising fuels your body and gives it the energy it needs to get things done. Of course, it’s definitely ok to treat yo’ self every now and again. But overall, if you want to feel and be the best version of yourself that you can be, having a healthy body give you the motivation you need to face each day with confidence.

4. Choose to be Happy

Believe it or not, happiness is a choice. Which means that when you choose to be happy, you can prevent yourself from being held hostage by any negative feelings or things that may creep in to your life. Which leaves more time for you to invest in yourself.

5. Check Off Things on Your Bucket List

Whether you are raising kids, working to pay bills, doing the daily grind, or all of the above, it’s easy to get caught up in the monotony of life and forget about the aspirations you once had. Well, I’m here to say that today’s the day you stop doing the bare minimum to survive and actually get out there and start living your life. I’m not saying completely walk away from your responsibilities. Those are definitely important to attend to. But I am saying that at least once a month you should take a breather and do something you’ve always want to experience. Otherwise, before you know it, you’ll be 80 years old and wondering what you did with your life. Which is pretty scary if you ask me.

6. Read and Listen More

Reading books and listening to podcasts is a great way to invest in yourself. Aside from learning new things, you will also improve your vocabulary, gain important problem solving skills, see the world in a new light, get your creative juices flowing, and actually be able to relax a bit. Plus, it’s a great life altering form of entertainment. So make sure you take time regularly to check out new materials that you can listen to or read.

7. Choose Your Friends Wisely

The types of people you choose to have in your life have a HUGE effect on the way you act and behave. Ever heard the saying, “Birds of a feather stick together.”? If so, then you know that this especially true when it comes to your friends. So, if you want your life to be successful, adventurous, uplifting, or whatever, make sure you filling your life with friends who possess those same attributes.

8. Get Rid of Anything Toxic

Have you ever taken a moment to think about the role your environment and the choices you make play in your life? When it comes to the things you do and bring in to your life, you become a direct product of what you choose to surround yourself with. If your life is filled with toxic things…friends, screen time, food choices, and just a lot of bad decisions in general, your personality and the choices you make will be greatly influenced by those things. Which is why choosing to keep all toxic things out of your life is great way to invest in yourself because, at the end of the day, bad attracts bad, and good attracts good. So if you want a life that is filled with nothing but good things, then you need to make sure you are only surrounding yourself with places, people and things that are a positive influence on your life.

9. Be Grateful

Want to reduce anger, get more sleep, improve your mental health, and have better relationships with those around you? Then practice gratitude every. single. day. Seriously, the time you spend be grateful for what you have instead of focusing on what your life lacks, the better off you will be. However, if you are currently in a personal low, I feel you; and am sending you all my love. But, I want you to know that things can and will get better. Promise. When you find life almost too hard to bear, take just a moment to think of a least one thing, even if it is something really small like simply being able to get out of bed, that you are grateful for each day. Before you know it, you will get to a point where see more good than bad, and gain an optimistic outlook that will get you through even the darkest of days.

10. Practice Mindfulness

Learning to become mindful can have such a positive influence on your life. So, if possible, spend at least 5-10 minutes a day meditating. Something that can be as simple as taking a walk, sitting in a quiet place, or just closing your eyes and taking in slow, deep breaths. Each time you do this, you will improve your ability to concentrate, increase your level of happiness, reduce stress, and become more self-aware.

11. Forgive Others

When others wrong you, it can be hard to let go of the hurtful things they said and/or did. However, when you have anger in your heart toward someone else you are only hurting yourself in the long run. It is know fact that in the long run, forgiveness can have a huge positive impact on your life. Because, aside from freeing up energy that can be focused on something more purposeful, forgiveness also gives you the ability to be more empathetic and have more control over your life.

12. Manage Your Time

If you want to maximize the things you are doing with your life, time management is a great way to do that. These days, time is super valuable. Aside from that, make sure to create some form of schedule that causes you to invest your time in the things that matter most.

13. Love Yourself

This is probably the most important way to invest in yourself. Making an effort to love yourself just the way you are through daily affirmations, self-reflection, and internalized thoughts is crucial. If you want people to respect and love you as you are, then you need to already need be doing that to yourself. It’s easy to recognize and nit pick all the things you are lacking. But, the more time you spend loving yourself, the more confident you will become in achieving your goals and sharing what you have to offer with those around you.

As I’m sure you can tell, the choices you make have a HUGE impact on your over-all wellbeing and happiness. Which is why it’s so important to invest in yourself.
